Sky Mavis, creator of the acclaimed blockchain-based game Axie Infinity, has revealed plans to develop a new game in a partnership with Ethereum-based NFT collection, CyberKongz. The new venture aims to establish a more extensive gaming ecosystem on the Ronin blockchain, designed to boost interaction within the world of blockchain gaming.
However, this intriguing announcement was not without some skepticism. Sky Mavis had presented the play-to-earn (P2E) model with Axie Infinity, enabling users to accumulate crypto tokens by playing the game. This innovative model excited the gaming universe initially and resulted in a skyrocketed sales volume during 2021. However, the years 2022 and 2023 saw a significant regression in these sales volumes.
Despite the P2E model’s challenges, Sky Mavis remains ambitious about its partnership with CyberKongz. The latter’s Play & Kollect game, a brainchild of the Polygon-based blockchain that lets players secure NFTs within the game, is also moving to the Ronin blockchain. This shift will potentially allow CyberKongz to broaden its user base by reaching out to the Ronin blockchain’s core gaming community.
Interestingly, the interest in blockchain gaming has dwindled recently, with many crypto-based games transitioning to a non-crypto approach. According to Aleksander Larsen, co-founder of Sky Mavis, the P2E model needs revamping, emphasizing that games need to be fun and include a robust economic backup that facilitates players to earn.
Yet, there are high hopes for a revival in the blockchain gaming arena. A game or an experience that adequately comprehends the underlying motivations driving users towards Web3 could be the catalyst for a renewed interest. There are potential benefits and anticipations surrounding this new partnership and the development of a new game. However, the effectiveness and success of these plans must overcome the inherent challenges within the current blockchain gaming sphere.
Nevertheless, Kathleen Osgood, Head of Business Development at Sky Mavis, asserts that the key to drawing a massive audience lies in novel approaches that leverage Web3 as a new experience while successfully engaging those users intrinsically appealed by Web3’s unique offerings.
With Sky Mavis taking steps to integrate its infrastructure into Web3’s ecosystem through Ronin blockchain, the company could create longer-lasting and more rewarding gaming communities. Let’s watch how these exciting developments unfold and potentially propel the world of blockchain gaming to new heights.
