The upcoming metaverse game, Otherside, from the creators of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, has managed to impress thousands of players during its “Second Trip” demo this spring. The technology powering Otherside comes from startup Improbable, which has now opened up the platform for other creators to build more of the metaverse. MSquared (M²) is a creation suite for interoperable online worlds, a metaverse creation engine supporting the development of digital assets and experiences within those worlds. Improbable believes that this ambitious project will lead to the creation of a network of metaverses.
Improbable’s MSquared tools have gained interest with the recent opening of early access and the open-sourcing of the Metaverse Markup Language (MML) for builders. Construct, a metaverse environment, has already seen numerous individuals experimenting with the tools. Improbable’s successful Otherside demos showcase the capabilities of the technology, but it is the smaller, spontaneous online sessions that have provided valuable insights for Improbable.
According to Improbable CEO Herman Narula, the ability to quickly set up online sessions and attract hundreds or thousands of users can open up new economic models. This will promote the development of novel business models, proving out valuable use cases essential for the growth of the metaverse.
Tech giants like Google, Nvidia, and Dolby are supporting MSquared-powered worlds with their cloud streaming tech. Improbable is set to reveal further brand and content partnerships, as well as more details on its technical implementation, including decentralized governance and digital ownership. While MSquared “runs on Web3 principles,” Narula explains that the platform is blockchain-based with blockchain-optional experiences, offering balance and flexibility.
However, the enthusiasm around the metaverse has simmered since its peak in late 2021 and early 2022. Narula attributes this to misunderstandings of what the metaverse is, conflating it with virtual and augmented reality, and unfulfilled promises from tech companies. Despite the skepticism surrounding the metaverse and Improbable, Narula believes that MSquared-powered events will ultimately win over skeptics by demonstrating the platform’s potential and delivering on its promises.
In conclusion, the development and success of the metaverse may rely on technologies like Improbable’s MSquared, providing creators with the tools to develop unique and engaging experiences within the network of metaverses. Skepticism may still be present, but the potential for the metaverse to redefine the digital world and bring about new economic models is undeniable, and this is what the growing community of creators and users will carry forward in their pursuit of a truly immersive online environment.
