AB de Villiers’ NFT Hack: A Cautionary Tale in the World of Web3

South African cricket legend Abraham Benjamin de Villiers, aka AB de Villiers, recently opened up about falling victim to an NFT hack, during which he lost a significant portion of his digital collectibles. At the time, de Villiers held approximately 300 NFTs. As a vocal supporter of both NFTs and cryptocurrency, the hack served as a harsh reminder of both the potential benefits and drawbacks of the rapidly evolving Web3 landscape.

De Villiers recounted his experience, in which a seemingly legitimate NFT – appearing as a new Pudgy Penguin drop – fooled him into signing a malicious contract. After paying a $1 gas fee, he found the transaction stalled, leading him to initiate it multiple times. Unfortunately, this enabled the hacker to fully access de Villiers’ wallet, resulting in the loss of many of his digital assets.

Despite the security breach, de Villiers remains an advocate for cryptocurrency and related projects. He revealed in an interview that he has been a fan of the XRP token – even investing prior to the SEC lawsuit against the cryptocurrency. The cricketer credits his brothers for introducing him to the world of digital assets, admitting that he maintained a skeptical stance for a few years before fully embracing the technology.
