Apple Vision Pro: Spatial Computing Revolution vs Metaverse Hype

Intricate mixed-reality headset scene, sleek futuristic design, warm ambient lighting, contrasting tones of shadow & light, upbeat & confident mood, user immersed in a blend of AR/VR digital content, realistic spatial computing representation, gaming, work & communication setting, artistic emphasis on interaction and innovation, tangible digital presence.

Apple’s latest mixed-reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro, has stirred excitement and curiosity among tech enthusiasts since its unveiling at the WWDC on June 5. With a price tag of $3,499, the headset is set to launch in the U.S. in early 2024, followed by other countries. Notably, the word “metaverse” was absent in the launch, with Apple taking deliberate steps to call its technology the first “spatial computer.”

The new marketing approach focuses on “spatial” and “spatial computing” rather than buzzwords like “metaverse,” “AR,” and “VR.” According to Apple’s VP of the technology development group, Mike Rockwell, the creation of their first spatial computer required innovation across nearly every aspect of the system. This standalone spatial computer offers the most advanced personal electronics device in a compact wearable form factor.

Back in January 2022, Bloomberg’s Apple tech reporter Mark Gurman suggested via Twitter that the firm had no intention of approaching the sector in a similar vein to Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta, particularly in relation to the notion of the metaverse. Apple’s Vision Pro features both augmented reality and virtual reality capabilities, allowing users to interact with digital content that feels physically present in their space. The mixed-reality headset is intended for use in short bursts for work, gaming, and communication purposes.

The anticipation for Apple’s headset had some investors hoping metaverse-related tokens would surge. However, an SEC lawsuit against Binance on the same day dampened optimism for metaverse-related tokens. The total market cap for metaverse tokens decreased by 10% to $7.7 billion over 24 hours.

Apple’s unique approach to mixed reality technology with the Vision Pro headset emphasizes the company’s dedication to innovation and its focus on spatial computing. As the company turns away from the concept of the metaverse, it further establishes itself as a leader in providing transformative experiences for users through its products and technologies.
