Swiss Football and Credit Suisse: A New Game in NFTs and Women’s Football Promotion

Neo-futuristic style artwork of Swiss Women’s National Football Team, digital portraits rendered as NFTs, dance on an Ethereum blockchain backdrop. Incorporate the vibrant energy of a football match, the spotlight glowing under twilight, creating a dramatic mood. Illustrate a crowd cheering, symbolising support for women's football, the excitement palpable. Emit an aura of innovation and the dawn of a new era in sports promotion.

The collaboration between the Swiss investment bank Credit Suisse and the Swiss Football Association (SFA) has seen the light of day in the form of a non-fungible token (NFT) collection. With the noble intent of promoting women’s football, Credit Suisse is releasing digital portraits of the Swiss Women’s National Team members as NFTs. This initiative is not only an innovative way of generating funds but also creates a unique platform for supporters to cheer on women’s football in an unconventional way.

The collection consists of 756 NFTs and, merrily enough, it doesn’t merely stop at the digital realm. The collectibles, minted on Ethereum, are paired with perks that drastically transcends the boundaries of traditional collectible culture. For instance, a physical counterpart of the artwork, meeting players, and exclusive signed jerseys makes the purchases quite a deal for fans.

It’s no surprise that current innovations have married sports with NFTs. The application of a nascent technology like blockchain has set wide new horizons for brands and teams. It is an exciting dawn for women’s football, as they start to garner the limelight in this new space. A recent instance marking this shift was the collaboration of popular NFT, World of Women, with Spanish football team, FC Barcelona. A digital artwork was unveiled to honor the star football player Alexia Putellas which paved a path forward for others.

While these initiatives are commendable, some skepticism still looms around NFTs and their longevity. With shifting digital trends and unpredictable markets, one could wonder if NFTs could hold their charm. Their price, too, ranges from as low as about $167 to as high as $11,000, which might not be accessible for everyone.

However, the ultimate price is the spotlight shifted on women’s football. As Sandra Caviezel, the head of partnerships and sponsorship at Credit Suisse, foresees, the proceeds from these NFTs directly support the women’s national team and are ploughed back into women’s football. It’s a decision to harness the power of new technology to challenge the old norms, paving the way for a more inclusive sporting future.
