Golf Meets Blockchain: LinksDAO Drives Revival of Golf Clubs with NFTs and New Membership Tiers

Bold moves by a global golf community LinksDAO have opened ways to blend golf and blockchain technology. The group has taken their venture to the next level, offering new membership tiers while setting the stage for an amplified user interaction with its decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) set-up and their owned golf courses.

LinksDAO reached a significant milestone in early 2022 by initially launching its non-fungible token (NFT) membership collection. The sale was a success as it earned $10.5 million, which was then used to obtain a top-tier golf course. These memberships, shaped as tokens, instantly brought in an array of perks for the holder, such as a voice in the governance decision-making process and anticipated access to a crowd-funded golf club.

Evolving the initial proposition, the organization revealed plans in March last year to purchase the Spey Bay Golf Club for an estimated $1 million, situated on the northern Scottish coast. With its official closure in May 2023, the course’s renovation is set to launch this fall.

Yet the experiment doesn’t stop there. Recently, the organization has launched new membership tiers aiming to engage broader demographics of golf and crypto enthusiasts. The new Starter tier is available for $99 a year, providing access to the digital community and offering discounts on partner brand goods. The increased Player tier, priced at $499 a year, further enables access to a network of over 800 private golf courses. The Pro tier charges $1,499 a year, granting access to over 1,300 member-hosted and private courses, extending up to the Spey Bay club when it becomes operational.

Accessibility has been broadened as LinksDAO now offers an option to pay with credit card in fiat currency. The group’s innovative approach also comprises varying memberships for its Spey Bay club, with the cost and perks variating dramatically.

Considering this new move, one might find the blend of blockchain, NFTs and golf, a peculiar mix. However, it poses a challenge to traditional golf clubs around the world who might potentially be on the edge of a blockchain revolution. As the community grows and adapts to these new approaches, would this development end up revolutionizing the way golf communities function, or become a jarring mishmash of unrelated fields, one can only wait and watch. All eyes now rest on how successful this experiment turns out, and whether it encourages further blending of sports and blockchain worlds.
