In a recent episode of Cointelegraph’s Hashing It Out podcast, Arno Bauer, the senior solution architect at Binance Smart Chain (BNB Chain), shed light on what the future holds for the protocol. Known for its audacious labeling as the “Ethereum killer”, Bauer clarified, this wasn’t BNB Chain’s initial intent – instead, it was to offer exceptional value to a unique user base.
Contrary to viewpoints that the BNB Chain was designed to outmaneuver Ethereum, Bauer insisted this wasn’t the objective. In his words, “I wouldn’t call ourselves an Ethereum killer because I don’t think anyone wants to kill Ethereum.” Rather than positioning itself as a nemesis, BNB Chain aims to carve a niche for itself and contribute significantly to the Web3 ecosystem.
BNB Chain’s recent launch of opBNB, a layer-2 testnet structures based on the Optimism OP Stack, geared towards improving scalability, has drawn criticism. Detractors argue that such a move might trigger a fragmentation within the BNB Chain ecosystem, potentially bewildering users and creating a complicated decision-making process.
In response to this, Bauer explained that the solution lies in encouraging wallet providers and infrastructure builders to design seamless integrations that do not require users to concern themselves with technical aspects. By doing so, it might mitigate the fear of users being overwhelmed by the plethora of layer-1 and layer-2 options available.
While multiple options exist, Bauer noted that this presents no issues for the future. Instead, the presence of various networks is indicative of the need for such platforms to deliver on scalability promises to support the surge in Web3 adoption.
Many in the crypto space will be watching closely to see if BNB Chain can execute its ambitious plans without drowning in the sea of alternatives. Discussions around Ethereum’s potential usurper will likely persist, but it remains clear – BNB Chain is determined to forge its path without hostile intentions towards ETH, driving a healthier and more competitive crypto environment.
