A team of researchers from San Diego State University in California has harnessed the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to track and expose alarming numbers of cryptocurrency free giveaway scams on social networking platform X. In a year-long study, the team unearthed 95,111 scam cases, initiated by 87,617 deceptive accounts. The AI-based system, aptly called GiveawayScamHunter, managed to compile these findings autonomously.
Scammers exploit the ease of networking offered by X’s Lists feature to gain unsuspecting victims. These scammers entice users with promised cryptocurrency giveaways, leading to massive financial losses when users fall victim. But how exactly does the GiveawayScamHunter find these scams? The researchers trained the system to sift through user data associated with identified giveaway scams and built a robust detection pipeline. This innovative detection method uncovered virtually 100,000 incidences of prize scam lists.
These findings pointed to numerous unreported scam websites and wallets, enhancing our understanding of the modus operandi of the perpetrators. The data also estimates that more than 365 victims fell prey to these scams in a year, with overall financial damages reaching upwards of $872,000.
Unfortunately, despite the researchers reporting their findings to X and the larger cryptocurrency community, around 43.9% of the associated accounts remain active. However, it’s worth noting the majority of these persistent accounts are likely dormant spam accounts.
