Riding the wave of convenience that Artificial Intelligence (AI) brings, two-thirds of Chrome extensions may be waltzing their users into a cybersecurity abyss, new data suggests. According to a recent report by Incogni, 69% of AI-powered extensions for Google Chrome may present high-risk security threats, should a breach occur.

These extensions, a number of which facilitate writing tasks, inject an element of simplicity into our online routines while unwittingly opening the door to potential harm. Indeed, out of the 70 AI Chrome extensions inspected across multiple categories, 48 were categorized as high-impact risks in the event of a violation, even though a majority were considered low chance threats for security breaches to begin with.

These figures bring, Darius Belejevas, the head of Incogni, to argue that users should prioritize safeguarding their privacy and security over convenience. Indeed it was discovered that 59% of analyzed extensions collect user data, with a shocking 44% of them harvesting personally identifiable information (PII) like names and addresses.

Commenting on the findings, Belejevas stressed the importance of understanding both the range of data shared with extensions and their ability to protect it. He further cautioned users to consider potential risks when choosing AI Chrome extensions, enabling them to benefit from AI technology without sacrificing their personal security.

Such privacy concerns act as a litmus test for wider discomfort regarding data collection and exploitation that accompany the surge of accessible AI applications. Recently, a class-action lawsuit was set in motion claiming that Google violated privacy and property rights when it altered its privacy policy to permit data scraping for AI system training.
