Lastly, the team asserts the need for the technical capability to maintain control over superintelligence, keeping it safe and ensuring it stays in sync with trainers’ intentions. Avoiding the “foom scenario”—a rapid, uncontrollable surge in AI capabilities—requires implementing appropriate regulatory measures. OpenAI, however, acknowledges that the specifics of this capability are not yet clear.

The potentially disastrous consequences of uncontrolled AI development have prompted experts in the field to call for proactive governance and regulation. Establishing a safe superintelligence is an ongoing challenge, one that the world currently has no definitive answer to. OpenAI posits that if these three-pillars are addressed, AI’s potential can be harnessed for good, improving societies and providing new tools for creative applications.

Despite the accelerated pace of AI advancement, efforts to halt its growth would necessitate “a global surveillance regime,” the blog suggests, cautioning that even this may not guarantee success. As the world grapples with these complex questions, OpenAI remains dedicated to exploring the pivotal matter of ensuring that the technical capability to keep superintelligent AI safe is achieved.
